What is Domestic Violence?
In the most general sense, domestic violence is violent actions taken by one member of a household or family against another person in that family. Domestic violence is not limited spousal abuse. It can happen with divorced or separated spouses, domestic partners, parents and children, against the elderly, and even people involved in a relationship.

The law almost always requires the police to arrest anyone, rightly or wrongfully, accused of spousal abuse. A misdemeanor conviction for spousal abuse could result in a year in the county jail. A felony conviction can result in two or more years in state prison.

Unfortunately, recent laws intended to protect victims, often victimize innocent individuals. District attorneys often pursue spousal abuse cases even when the alleged victim admits that they lied about the abuse, or the police exaggerated their complaints.
